I’ve been a family photographer for about 7 years now and I still get nervous before every photo shoot. I know the effort involved in getting a family unit to be stain-free, somewhat coordinated and in pleasant moods for more than an 18-second period. I also understand the financial investment – not just in the session itself, but in all the details like boots and bows and bribery items. I think about all of this time and effort and the fact that people have trusted me to capture this feat that may very well be impossible to tackle again before little Johnny’s big boy tooth grows in or Sally leaves for summer camp and all I can think is “Don’t screw this up”.
But there’s always a point where I remember that these are humans in front of me and that what humans want more than anything is to connect and to be seen. So instead of fretting about backlighting and motion blur, I talk. I talk a lot. Maybe even too much. But in the end, we’ve connected. We’ve shared. They’ve laughed and loved on one another and I’ve been fortunate enough to feel and capture that love. And it’s really the best thing ever.
H family, I appreciate you for choosing me and sharing your time with me.
